When it comes to high-delity
audio equipment, David Haer
is oen described as the man
who led the charge. In 1950,
David Haer and Herb Keroes
started a Philadelphia-based
company called Acrosound in
order to build and sell audio-
quality output transformers,
primarily for home electronics hobbyists. In 1954, David
Haer and Herb Keroes parted company. That same
year, Haer met an audio engineer named Ed Laurent,
who had designed a novel single-tube driver circuit for a
power amplier. In 1955, the two men founded the Dyna
Company which later became Dynaco with the intenon
of not only producing transformers, but high-quality
audio circuitry.
Dynaco’s rst product was the Mk. II 50 wa
power amplier. Available as a kit or preassembled unit,
the Mk. II was
sold for several
years unl its
replacement
in 1956 by the
Mk. III amplier
which produced
60 was.
Dynaco is best
remembered
by the ST-70 that was launched in 1959 and sold
primarily as a Dynakit. A masterpiece of ecient circuit
design, the ST-70 provided reliable, high-quality audio
amplicaon at an aordable price. More than 350,000
ST-70 ampliers had been sold when producon nally
ceased, making the ST-70 the most popular tube power
amplier ever made. Today, the Dynaco ST-70 is sll
considered to be one of the most outstanding tube
ampliers ever made.
In 1966, Dynaco became a wholly owned
subsidiary of Tyco, Inc. and David Haer remained with
the company for a few years, but le in 1974 to join
Ortofon, manufacturer and importer of high-end phono
cartridges. In 1977, Haer founded the Haer Company,
connuing the tradion of oering high quality kits and
assembled hi- gear. The Haer DH-200 was introduced
using mosfet outputs – a feature that way ahead of the
rest of the amplier community. In 1987 Halfer sold his
namesake to Rockford Corporaon where chief engineer
Jim Strickland took on the challenge of moving Halfer
towards building high end ampliers. This culminated
with the 9505 which by all accounts is one of the most
musical power amps ever made.
In 1995, Haer le the hi- market to instead
focus on producing ampliers for the studio market. This
is when Radial began the aliaon with Rockford, taking
on the distribuon of Haer ampliers for Canada.
Radial purchased the Haer brand from Rockford in
2014 with a goal of eventually re-launching some of the
Haer classic ampliers.

The Haer PH50 is a high performance phono
preamp for moving magnet (dynamic) cartridges
that incorporates a well dened RIAA curve
to preserve and transmit the original program
material with minimal coloraon. Parcular
aenon has been applied to reducing noise, a
problem common to the 33 RPM recording chain,
resulng in a -82dB noise oor with greater than
91dB of dynamic range and less than 0.002%
distoron.
The Haer PH60 is a high performance phono
preamp for moving coil cartridges that combines
a class-A transformerless head-amp design with a
well dened RIAA curve to preserve and transmit
the original program material with minimal
coloraon. Due to the extremely low signal level
produced by moving coils, parcular aenon has
been applied to reducing noise while retaining
the purity of the signal path to address the most
demanding audiophiles.
The Haer HA15 is a 100% discrete headphone
amplier that has been meculously designed
to produce Haer’s legendary sound quality with
sucient gain to power any type of headphone.
A unique ‘focus’ control may be engaged that
brings the stereo image to the center to beer
approximate the feel as if listening to loudspeakers
in a typical ambient space.
As the Tube Head will likely nd its way into
more discerning studios, a number of features
have been added to address this market. These
include balanced line inputs for easy connecon
to pro-audio workstaons and mixing consoles,
dual headphone outputs to enable the arst and
engineer to ‘share’ the listening experience when
evaluang the mix and throughputs that enable
the more creave engineer to use the tube drive
circuit to add tube character to tracks.
Proudly made in North America, the Haer PH34
and PH44 SUTs are passive devices that employ
ultra high performance Jensen Transformers to
boost the low-level signal produced by a moving
coil cartridge by as much as 31dB without any
amplicaon or the associated noise that they
produce. Jensen wrote the book on transformer
technology and for over 40 years has gained the
accolades of being the world’s most respected and
revered audio transformer manufacturer.
